Misc. Notes
born and raised on the Joe Rourke farm, Grandpa moves into the town of Elfros when he marries and continues farming. He builds home outside of town (Red roofed) and lives there till my grandparents and father decide to move to Lethbridge and build a home in 1958. I believe the house was completed around October of that year. The Henderson Directory has no house listing in 1958, must have been a vacant lot. In 1959, Ralph Rouike is listed (Mispelled) and he is listed as a carpenter for Bohne Construction. This company built most of the homes in the surrounding area, But Art Batty also built homes, who did what? In the phone book, the address is listed as 1514, not 1508 and his phone number as FAIRfx 7-7919, but in 1963 it was changed to 327-7919. In 1960 he took over the J & N Confectionary and Grocery from John and Norma Eccles for one year till Alfons Krol bought it out. It was located at 1016 9 Ave S. (Tin Tin Grocery now) 1961, he is listed as a farmer and by 1962 he is driving for Allied Rock Products ltd. and continues driving till 1965 when the family moves to Ardill to start a hotel and restaurant. My dad (RE) is listed as a farmer between 1963-65 as he ran a egg farm at the time. The house in Lethbridge is then rented out till 1969. In 1966, Harry M. Mitchell was living there for a year, at the same tiime another unknown Rourke was recorded as living in Lethbridge. James and Alice Rourke are listed at 405 4 St. S., are they somehow related, what line? In 1967, Ralph P. and Susan Kuipers, a Chiropractor moves in for a year. 1968, David M. and Joyce MacNeill a UFA Co-Op manager moves there and in 1969, Douglas K. and Elizabeth Walker, who was an editor for the Lethbridge Herald were living at the time. In March of 1968, Ralph G. passed away in Ardill, Saskatchewan, causing the family to move back to Lethbridge. My mother and father were newly married and were expecting me at the time. Since the house was still occupied, my parents rented a house on 13th St. South, number 732, where they stayed till after I was born. My dad was working at the Park Plaza Hotel, his landlords were a nice Italian family. My grandmother stayed with my Aunt Elearnor and uncle Vic on 16th Avenue till the Walker’s moved out. Grandma and my parents with little baby moved back to 1508 and raised me and my sister there. Mom and Dad had the 328-7297 phone number while living on 13th Street and still have the same number today. RE Rourke is listed as living at the house in the 1969 phone book, so they must have moved sometime after the Henderson Directory was being put together but before the phone book was. My guess would be around the summer of 1969 as I recall mom telling me a story of me crawling around the yard with casts on my feet in that summer. I was born with clubbed feet that required casts to straighten them.
